Max Verstappen has disagreed with Mario Andretti's idea to let guest drivers participate in Formula One races, who thinks that introducing guests would be a good way of increasing popularity of the sport.

Andretti, a former F1 champion, floated the idea of having guest drivers race in a third car for each team. The American drove the first car at Lotus himself when he first made his debut at Lotus in 1968, immediately taking pole position at his first Grand Prix.

He thinks that re-introducing the idea of letting guest drivers participate could be good for F1, as he would find it fantastic to see the IndyCar champion drive a third Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull at the American Grand Prix.

"I don't think that's the best option," Verstappen countered to the Dutch version of Motorsport.

"It would be the same as if we would be driving an IndyCar or NASCAR-race.

"Those kinds of things don't seem very wise to me."

Fernando Alonso did do exactly that last year, as the Spaniard ditched McLaren at Monaco to participate in the Indy 500, where he led the race for a little while before breaking down.
