McLaren have "aggressive set-up" for Sochi to be more quick

It's clear the 2018 McLaren car is still seriously lacking straight-line speed. The Honda engine has hampered the car for so long, but the British team can no longer blame this for their troubles. To try and recover speed, the team are making aerodynamic adjustments at every race. According to Fernando Alonso, the changes they tested at Monza will be used in Russia next weekend.

"I think that some of the ideas we tested at Monza, where we improved on Saturday, were more for the reduction of aerodynamic drag, so they will be implemented," Fernando Alonso said.

"We hope that Russia can be the first opportunity to try these arrangements again."

Alonso guided the car into seventh place at Singapore last weekend. The six points picked up here brings the team total to 58. Alonso, who is leaving F1 at the end of the season, has bagged 50 of those points to Vandoorne's eight.

With a completely new driver line-up next year, it's clear the McLaren workforce are desperate to find some consistency. The Sporting director, Gil de Ferran, confirms the developments in an interview on formula passion.

"At every race, we always try to bring aerodynamic news, but this is not the only aspect, because we are exploring different solutions in this regard," de Ferran said.

"As Fernando said, at Monza, we decided to take a completely different route, and things have worked well and therefore it is not excluded that we can continue in a similar direction in Russia."
