Pierre Gasly has said that he was the "first piece" in Red Bull Racing's relationship with Honda, as the Frenchman has been partnered with them ever since he drove in the Super Formula and has a strong relationship with the Japanese engine manufacturer.

Gasly has been one of the stand-out performers this season in Formula One, as he's put in some stellar performances for Toro Rosso in his first full season in the sport. Now, he's been heavily linked with the second seat at Red Bull next season next to Max Verstappen, as Daniel Ricciardo has decided to leave the team for Renault in 2019.

Luke Smith of Crash.net spoke to Gasly about his relationship with Honda and how it has grown over the years since his time in Super Formula in Japan.

"I think it was pretty funny, when I went to Super Formula, people started to talk about it already, that Red Bull is making a first contact with Honda and probably for a longer-term deal or something like this," Gasly explained when asked about Honda's new partnership with Toro Rosso and Red Bull.

"Year by year, everything happened, what people said at the time - I’ve been the first piece in this relationship with Honda.

"It’s really cool, and I’m really happy about it because I started to build that relationship in Super Formula, so we have a really cool story behind us, and a really strong one as well.

"We fought for the championship until that last race, and just missed the title after that typhoon for half a point.

"We’ve gone through really different emotions and a lot of experiences together, so it’s good to see them going with Red Bull.

"I’m sure they will have a lot of success with them. It’s a pretty cool story."
