Charles Leclerc headed up a one-two finish for Sauber in final practice for the German Grand Prix on Saturday, setting the pace in a rain-hit session that saw most drivers limit their running.

Light rain in the build-up to the start of the session grew in intensity as it got underway, leaving drivers to complete a handful of installation laps as they gauged conditions on the Wet tyre.

Hulkenberg was the only driver to manage an outlap on Intermediates, only to pit immediately and switch onto Wets before setting a time of 1m36.873s, which stood as the best time until the closing stages of the session.

Hulkenberg's Renault teammate, Carlos Sainz Jr., had a big spin in the damp conditions at Turn 10, acting as a warning sign to the rest of the field, but the rain grew lighter in the closing stages, allowing a number of drivers to get out and set a lap time.

In the final moments of the session, Leclerc was able to improve his lap to 1m34.577s, handing him top spot in the final standings, with Sauber teammate Marcus Ericsson taking second place, four-tenths of a second behind.

Sergey Sirotkin finished third for Williams ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, while the Toro Rosso duo of Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley followed in fifth and sixth. Hulkenberg's early lap was good enough for seventh at the chequered flag, while Kimi Raikkonen and Lance Stroll were eighth and ninth as the final drivers to set a time.

Lewis Hamilton only featured in the final minute of the session, completing an outlap and an inlap for Mercedes, amid speculation he is ill. Mercedes was quick to deny this, saying Hamilton was "not ill", with its limited running being by choice.

Qualifying for the German Grand Prix begins at 3pm local time at Hockenheim (2pm BST).
