Haas F1's Kevin Magnussen has admitted that he almost crashed in FP2 in exactly the same way his teammate Romain Grosjean did earlier on Friday, which is by having the DRS open while in a corner.

While some cars have enough downforce to permit doing this, this is certainly not the case for Haas. Romain Grosjean is an example of that, as the Frenchman tried to find the limit, and went way over it in his attempt. He crashed his car heavily, which also led to him missing FP2 and with that, valuable practice time.

“I tried once and nearly ended up like Romain,” Magnussen said when asked by Motorsport if he attempted using DRS through Abbey, the first turn of the circuit.

"It's not possible for us to do.

"Red Bull were doing it I think, which is incredible because it's not even close to being possible for us.

“It might be possible [to use DRS through Turn 2] with no fuel in the car, but I’m not sure it’ll be faster because you put a lot of energy in the tyres.

“If you have the downforce like Red Bull it looked solid.

"They don’t put much extra energy into the tyres, that’s the kind of thing we need to take into account.”

Haas will want to build on their performance from last weekend in Austria, which saw them yield a record amount of 22 points between Grosjean and Magnussen, who finished fourth and fifth respectively. They looked fast again on Friday, but whether they can repeat what they did in Spielberg is very questionable.
