McLaren surprised by Ferrari and Red Bull's upgrades

McLaren technical director, James Key, has conceded that he did not think the 2022 cars would evolve as quickly as they have done. The new technical regulations this year are the biggest change Formula 1 has seen in 40 years, and the reintroduction of ground effect aerodynamics was bound to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. Ferrari sporting director, Laurent Mekies, predicted that the cars would be level on pace with the 2021 cars by the start of 2023. The machines last year were already around a second adrift of the pace of the 2020 cars, and as the engineers became more familiar with the concept, the improvements were bound to be massive.
