Ex-F1 driver warns Masi decision may have poured ‘big jug of water' over Hamilton's raging fire

Former Formula 1 driver Perry McCarthy has said he cannot rule out the possibility of Sir Lewis Hamilton retiring following the contentious end to the 2021 season. Max Verstappen beat his rival to the championship in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after race director Michael Masi allowed a limited number of lapped runners past the late Safety Car as time constraints threatened to prevent any further green flag running. The Dutchman had bolted on a fresh set of tyres during the Safety Car period, and was then able to overtake Hamilton on the final lap of the race to seal the title.
