Why Mercedes were suddenly much quicker than Red Bull Racing at Portimao

It was remarkable that Mercedes were suddenly the better team in the duel with Red Bull Racing in Portimao. The Austrians seemed to have the best car in the first two races, but that was not the case in Portugal. Why did Mercedes come out on top in Portimao? Mercedes is lucky In the first two races Mercedes may have scored the most points, but it was mainly the RB16B owned by Max Verstappen that was pointed out as the best car on the grid.
