Mercedes used ‘get out of jail free card' at Imola

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admits that they used their 'get out of jail free card' by leaving Imola with the lead in both championships. It was an incident-packed race for the German outfit as Sir Lewis Hamilton slid into the gravel while chasing title rival Max Verstappen for the lead, while shortly after Valtteri Bottas wrote-off his W12 in a high-speed collision with Mercedes protege George Russell. Ironically though, it was the red-flag period triggered by the Bottas/Russell crash which allowed Hamilton to escape the gravel and regroup to the pits in P9, before recovering to P2 by the time the chequered flag flew.
