70 years on: F1's first World Championship race

Formula One's rich, illustrious and often controversial history began at Silverstone on this day in 1950, with the first World Championship race won by Italy's Giuseppe Farina. Here, the PA news agency casts its mind back 70 years to the day it all began. Alfa males Giuseppe Farina was the fastest of the dominant Alfa Romeo team, which took up all four berths on the front row of the starting grid. The 21-strong field was also sprinkled with royalty, as Thailand's Prince Bira lined up in his Maserati.
