Brawn: 'McLaren had to get rid of Honda to see where things went wrong'

Ross Brawn says that McLaren made the right call to stop using Honda engines and switch to Renault. The squad suffered three tough years with Honda from 2015 to 2017, but made great steps in 2019 in their second year with Renault power. Brawn believes that McLaren used Honda's underpowered engine as an excuse for other issues with the car and by switching to Renault they could see that there were bigger issues with the car.
