Lewis Hamilton beats Sebastian Vettel to pole position in Australia

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for the 2017 Formula 1 season opener in Australia, while Sebastian Vettel returned Ferrari to the front row of the grid. Hamilton looked in command throughout Q3, leading after the first runs and improving further on his second attempt with a 1:22.188, the quickest ever lap of the Albert Park circuit. Vettel found time on his final lap and moved up to second, missing out on pole by just 0.268 seconds, while Valtteri Bottas was third on his Mercedes debut, ahead of fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen.
