Carlos Sainz has lost his fourth-place finish from the Miami Grand Prix after being handed a five-second time penalty by stewards.

During a battle for fourth place with Oscar Piastri, Sainz tried an overtake at Turn 17 up the inside of the McLaren, but went too deep and hit the front-wing of the McLaren.

Piastri was forced to pit for a fresh wing, dropping him out of the points as Sainz took fourth on the road, although the incident was placed under investigation.

In the hearing, the stewards found that Sainz had lost the rear of the car, which caused him to collide with Piastri, who was attempting to turn away to give the Ferrari space.

Sainz was deemed "predominantly to blame" for the collision, with a five-second time penalty and one penalty point issued to him, down from the usual 10-second penalty and two penalty points in "light of the mitigating circumstances".

The penalty means he drops from fourth to fifth in the final results, with Sergio Perez moving up to fourth for Red Bull.
