Red Bull and Max Verstappen now hold the lead in both championship standings after the Monaco Grand Prix, after the Dutch driver won the race with Lewis Hamilton finishing seventh as the sole Mercedes finisher, with Verstappen explaining that he feels it's due to making fewer mistakes than their rivals. Now in the position of being the hunted, rather than the hunter, Verstappen explained that the championship lead has come about from being willing to sit back and take hefty points scores on days where the win has been out of reach. "I learned to take second and third places when I didn't have the car to win," Verstappen explained to La Gazzetta dello Sport, "while the instinct would always tell you to try anyway, making you take too many risks." Having narrowly lost out in Spain and Portugal, with the Mercedes W12 seeming a little stronger than the Red Bull RB16B on the fast, flowing circuits, Verstappen said it was important to strike back as quickly as possible and capitalise on the opportunity in Monaco. "We had to show on Sunday that we are really in the fight for the title," Verstappen said, "after a few races in which it was seen that we were losing some ground on Mercedes. "Now it's important to score every Sunday, avoid mistakes, or at least make big ones. So far we have been a team that has made less mistakes and that is why we are on top in the championship."
