Nico Hulkeberg believes his future in Formula 1 will depend on how he competes with his new Renault F1 team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Hulkenberg possessed an unwanted record of most grands prix without a podium finish and will likely have a more competitive team-mate in Ricciardo than Carlos Sainz of 2018.

"It is clear that I want to have a car that allows me to get on the podium, and we are busy with that," Hulkenberg said at the Renault launch of its new car. "I also think it's important that I now have a team-mate who is a proven Grand Prix winner.

"It was something like with Rubens (Barrichello), although it was different. It was my rookie season and for him it was his 18th.

"That was not a good or fair comparison, the current situation is much more realistic and better to compare, so for me personally, it is important to see how I perform compared to Daniel."

Ricciardo is about to take on a new chapter of his career, after appearing to be second-fiddle to former team-mate Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing.
