You may think Fernando Alonso has experienced it all, but Alonso has revealed the atmosphere ahead of the Daytona 24 hr is something that would be “inconceivable” in the pinnacle of motorsport and it took him by surprise.

It was announced in November that Alonso would compete in the event for the Wayne Taylor Racing team alongside Kamui Kobayashi, Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande,

This is just part of Alonso’s post-F1 career as he pursues the final piece of the triple crown, the Indy 500, having already won the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 hr.

Alonso believes the whole setup at Daytona and in America is far more open than elsewhere taking him slightly by surprise.

"Everything is much more open than in Europe at the race level, I had a good time last year, and this year, I have already seen some kids who have settled in the car,” said Alonso in an interview on f1only.

"They are very close to teams and drivers, they can even touch cars if they want to.

"It's something inconceivable in Formula 1 or even any other championship in Europe."

Alonso is competing at Daytona for the first time and feels it will be a good race which will get tougher as the days go by.

"I think it gives a good atmosphere to the race here in Daytona, and I know it will only intensify as the days go by."
