Qualifying analysis - all goes to plan for Mercedes

Drizzle at lunchtime on Saturday which left the Monaco track damp helped to make Q1 and Q2 two of the most dramatic qualifying sessions of the year, the first requiring Pirelli’s intermediate tyres throughout, the latter drying sufficiently to facilitate a switch to supersofts five minutes before the end. The result in both was some machine-gun fire lap times that registered, and were then beaten, faster than they could be written down. And some drivers were horribly unlucky. Dry road for the final Q3 session then set the scene for a tense scrap between Mercedes and Red Bull.
